Sacred Oils of India
In India for centuries medicinal plants have become famous throughout the world. Used in many Western medicinal formulas, as well as in Ayurevedic medicine. Many of these oils are used in modern aromatherapy and natural perfumery.
Here are three example of these precious oils.
Davana (Artemisia pallens) The oil of ritual. Associated with Shiva the Moon-God. Used in pancha karma clinics in India for ovarian and uterine cysts. In Aromatherapy use it is beneficial for anxiety and has a calming effect on the nervous system. In natural perfumery use it scent is sweet and fruity with a wet mossy undertone.
Mogra (Jasminum sambac) Mongra has been used for centuries to make garlands for the Gods and Goddesses. Associated with the Hindu God of love, Kama. In Aromatherapy use it is beneficial for nervous anxiety associated with depression. In natural perfumery it’s scent is warm, sweet and floral with a tea like undertone.
Tulsi (Ocymum basilicum) Not the same species as European basil, Indian basil is associated with Krishna as it is believed that Krishna always wore garlands of the basil around his neck. In Aromatherapy use it is beneficial for upper respiratory tract infection such as cold and coughs. In natural perfumery use it’s scent is spicy-sweet with a green fresh woody undertone.

Cypress (Cupressus sempervierns) ~ Loss and Transformation

Cypress is an evergreen tree with legendary long life and associated with death and transformation. It is extremely versatile, and easy to blend with other essential oils. Known as a circulatory and lymphatic decongestant it’s properties are well documented. On a personal level it is the oil of choice for loss and transformation.
Blended with Rose it helps connect to your heart chakra and allows you to recognize and accept your true feelings. Combined with Neroli it helps you to reach out to the world and connect to others, as difficult as it may be, when all you want to do is to shut the world out.

Aromatherapy as Energy Medicine
Although I trained in clinical and holistic aromatherapy the spiritual aspect of plant medicine cannot be separated in my work. Essential oils are derived from aromatic plants and man has utilized herbs for centuries, for many different purposes. These purposes have ranged from healing to ritual use and for the spiritual properties of the plants. When preparing a blend for a client, all aspects of the individual is taken into consideration and the degree to which the individual is willing to acknowledge and work with the spiritual energy dimension of the oil can heighten the healing process.
Here are some examples of essential oils and their physical and spiritual properties:
Angelica: Digestive aid, menopausal symptoms, connection to the angelic realm
Lavender: Skin healing, relaxant, to bring everyday actions to align with one’s spiritual goals
Vetiver: Antispasmodic, calming to the nervous system, helps to connect the intellectual mind to the spiritual
Jasmine: Anti-depressant, regulating, develops intuition and original thought
