JANUARY ~ THE MONTH OF BEGINNINGS AND OPPORTUNITIES

“The name, given to the month of “January”, is derived from the ancient Roman name “Janus” who presided over the gate to the new year. He was revered as the “God of Gateways”, “of Doorways” and “of the Journey”. Janus protected the “God of Heaven”, known as the “Lord of Beginnings”, is associated with the “Goddess Juno-Janus”, and often symbolized by an image of a face that looks forwards and backwards at the same time. This symbolism can easily be associated with the month known as many as the start of a new year which brings new opportunities. We cast out the old and bring in the new. It is the time when many reflect on events of the previous year and often resolve to redress or improve some aspect of daily life or personal philosophy.

Essential Oils of India
Many essential oils in current use today come from India, the land of spirituality and ancient wisdom. Sandalwood Santalum album (not to be confused with Sandalwood from Australia Santalum spicatum), is probably one of the best known but there are many less famous essentials oils with therapeutic properties that are worth knowing of. Here are three of my favourite.

Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanoides)
In India this grassy plant is sown wherever there is erosion of the soil. It’s strong root system holds onto the soil and prevents loss. One of the most centering and grounding oils in modern aromatherapy use.

Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum)
The India variety of Basil is also known as Basil Krishna, for it was said that Krishna always wore garlands of Tulsi around his neck. A warming oil beneficial for cold extremities.

Spikenard (Nardostchys jatamansi)
Named Jatamansi in India. This oil has a very strong scent, one that you either love or hate. Regulates the heart and nervous system.

Litha June 21 - 22 Summer Solstice

Litha known as the summer solstice occurs in the norther hemisphere on June 21-22 and in the southern hemisphere on December 21-22. The summer solstice marks the hight of the sun’s power on the longest day of the year.

The aromatic oils associated with this season are a combination of florals, spices and citrus. To create a botanical perfume for the summer holiday consider beginning with a base note scent reminiscent of seashores and foliage such as:

~Oakmoss absolute
To that add one of the following or a combination
~Lavender
~Rose Otto

Then add some top notes such as:
~Bergamot
~Lime
~Sweet Orange

To that add some spice to your masterpieces with one of the following:
~Black Pepper
~Ginger

Add a few drops of your chosen essential oils to your favorite base oil. Apply to pulse points and as Coco Chanel said to a young woman who asked her where to apply perfume, “where ever one wants to be kissed”.

Protect yourself and your family from Mosquitoes this summer!

The hot-wet summer months here in Hong Kong bring the start of the mosquito season. Some essential oils can act as a preventative measure to repel mosquitoes away from the skin.

There are several ways to work with essential oils — one is to add a few drops to the water in a vaporizer/burner. The second is to blend the appropriate oils into a unscented gel/light lotion base and apply to the skin. Care should be taken with young children, babies, pregnant women and individuals with sensitive skin if the latter DIY method is applied. Advise from a qualified aromatherapist is highly recommended on dosage and essential oil selection.

Formulation

Earth Girl product formulations are created by a qualified Aromatherapist using therapeutic doses of essential oils. Up to 3% concentration are used for our Body Oils and 1-2% for the Facial Creams and Oils. Commercial aromatherapy products contain a much lower percentage of essential oils.

As all our products are freshly made, they have a maximum shelf life of 6 to 12 months depending on the blend. Please store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

My perfumes are made with rare and precious essential oils extracted from plants, in a base of jojoba oil and beeswax. No animal fixatives, synthetic or petrochemical ingredients are used.

These natural perfumes are far more responsive to your unique chemistry than the commercial scents which lack the richness and complexity of the natural perfume. Synthetic perfume hit the senses bluntly all at once, is overpowering and invasive. Natural perfumes evolve over time and come to life more fully after being applied to the skin, as they being to interact with your body’s chemistry.

Natural Perfumes
Produced in very small quantities, once sold are only made by custom order. New perfumes are created during and around the time of the New Moon a particularly auspicious time for new fragrances and creative projects.

• Citrus Rose: Mandarin and Rose Otto in a Sandalwood base
• Lavender Rose: A deep full bodied true Lavender, a classic elegant scent
• Patchouli Rose: Rose Otto, Rose Geranium and Sandalwood
• Citrus Blossom: A burst of citrus and flora oils in a vintage Patchouli base
• Deep Forest: A sweet greennote with tinges of citrus and florals
• Earth: Earthy with a musky vibrancy, a very special scent
• Jasmine Garden: Take a stroll in a perfumed garden of Jasmine and Sandalwood
• Hippy Girl: A contemporary blend of Rose Otto and Lime

Price and Sizes Available

• 3ml to 15ml price range from $250-$480 Antique style glass perfume bottle with a glass dauber attached. These are highly concentrated luxurious perfume oils, for maximum scent get this version.
• 10ml $280 Glass roll on bottle. For everyday use, apply to pulse points.
• 15ml $380 Contemporary glass round bottle.

• Perfume Body Oil 100ml $380-$480 depending on style of bottle
  Generously scented and deeply hydrating created for after bath, shower as well as for use in the bath and during massage. In a base of jojoba oil, sweet almond oil, grapeseed oil and vitamin E.
  Dawn: Citrus with a green tone and a light floral touch
  Dusk: Musky, woodsy with a rosy, but never overly sweet, flora base
  Roses all Over: The purity of Rose Otto with a hint of chocolate Lavender

Solid Cream Perfume $520 2.50 oz.
Hand crafted artisan one-of-a-kind limited edition of solid cream perfume packaged in a gorgeous reproductive antique silver perfume case (with a mirror inside of cover not shown). The texture of this perfume is creamy, firm and luscious and is an intimate way to scent your body. Glides onto the skin beautifully.

Delivery
If we do not have a fresh perfume in stock when you order, we will make one especially for you. Please note that this process may take between 2-3 weeks to allow the natural essence to blend with one another and to fully mature.
